THIS WEEK'S FLAGS

ALL FLAGS
THE TAKE
"Running backs don't matter anymore. Any back behind a good offensive line will produce."
THE REALITY
League-average backs behind the league's best line still underperform elite backs on bad lines by nearly 0.3 yards per carry. Pass blocking, blitz recognition, and route running at the position are not interchangeable. The line matters. The back also matters.
THE TAKE
"Offensive coordinators who go conservative late are just being smart. You protect the lead."
THE REALITY
Teams that go conservative with a two-score lead in the fourth quarter lose at a higher rate than teams that keep attacking. The data on this is not close. Conservatism creates pressure. Pressure creates punts. Punts create momentum swings.
THE TAKE
"Quarterbacks win Super Bowls. Find the guy, build around him, everything else is secondary."
THE REALITY
Seven of the last ten Super Bowl champions ranked outside the top five in passing yards that season. Three of those champions had a quarterback on a rookie contract. Roster construction, coaching staff depth, and special teams units are not secondary. They are the actual argument.
THE TAKE
"College stats mean nothing. The speed of the NFL game exposes everybody."
THE REALITY
College production metrics, specifically adjusted yards per attempt and pressure rate against varying coverages, are among the strongest predictors of NFL success available at the draft. The scouts who dismiss college tape wholesale are the ones consistently missing in rounds two and three.
